SPILLER + CAMERON

Pantheon

Reincarnation is a key theme in the work of mother/son artistic duo, Spiller + Cameron, the concept of reincarnation arises metaphorically, in that each of their paintings is created as a different, sentinel-type watchman. Each titled after mythological Greek or Roman god.

Spiller+Cameon wanted to find a new way of building portraits, never intending that the face would be easy to see at first and intentionally not male or female. Combining various painted panels together to make abstracted facial features. Evolving with their own personality and expression.

By working collaboratively for months on large oil painted panels, Spiller+Cameron build up layers of different paint, employing various mark-making, colour combinations bringing the surfaces to life. The paintings are ignominiously spliced and cut up into smaller abstract components, containing: triangles, dots, stenciled letters and gestural marks. Appropriating ideas from: primitive masks and tribal art, tattoos and body art, prehistoric cave handprints combined with contemporary art language.

A selection of panels are arranged and re-arranged until the “right” balance is achieved, the individual elements are sewn together. The process brings the precision
and structural element to the works, flawlessly connected swatches create the impression of one piece. Once finished, they have a sense of permanence. The works have undergone an alchemical process of reincarnation, having been broken down and destroyed. Then stitched back together. The different panels read as a dialogue between Spiller + Cameron, demonstrating their different strengths of order and chaos. Understanding the cultural importance and potency of portraiture throughout history. The aim is to make links back through the history of art chain to create something new. This series of Spiller+Cameron’s paintings are named after resurrected iconic deities: Minerva the goddess of Wisdom, Atropos the goddess of fate and Eris the god of chaos, being amongst their attributes. These protagonists tower like guardians, watching over you, their presence embodying
a sense of protection.
