TELL ME YOUR STORY

09.04 – 09.05.2022

VISTA Project Space

“What is mythology but our own foundation, the story of our roots: a way to cross time and lift personal narratives through generations. Storytelling has been used to pass down history, in particular histories of people considered fringe from the mainstream. Throughout history myths have played an important part in our own world history, particularly in representation and art history. “Tell Me A Story,” Daniel Morowitz’s solo show, attempts to Queer the art historical canon through the mythologies that created it. By referencing Greek and judeo Christian mythology, major themes throughout art history, Daniel is situating the figures in his works inside of an established tradition. Adding elements of contemporary life such as cellular phones or figures and faces pulled from friends, lovers, pornography, or the internet, creates a self-mythology about the work, elevating Daniel’s own life to the level of art historical canon. The major strategy behind this is the use of collage within the paintings, by cutting up and recombining his own paintings, he is able to take figures and objects out of one situation and into an entirely new composition; this cutting and pasting is reflected in the conceptualizing of the works as well through the use of cutting and pasting the mythological themes. This is exemplified in Chimeric Self Portrait where Daniel’s own Visage is hybridized with animal parts and situated between two marble columns, a direct reference to Greek statuary and temples with the contemporary figure interjected inside. This hybridity and chimerism is a major theme in the works as the In betweenness does not completely fit into any particular space and disrupts established norms. The work is an open ended story disrupting established art historical canon and allowing the viewer to rewrite it as they see fit.”
